Imagining Spring Into Existence: My Process

February is when I start to think about gardening. It’s the time of year when daylight hours are noticeably longer and we start to stir from winter’s hibernation. It’s easier to get up in the morning and easier to drive home at night from work. And didn’t that infamous eternal groundhog Punxsutawney Phil predict an early spring?

The energy the sun exudes cannot be underestimated! It always awakens a fresh hope and anticipation of expectation and I find myself overrun with ideas as the days grow longer.

I recently went out and took some pictures of my property where I intend on doing some landscaping this year. This particular spot is about 10 by 15 feet. I began to imagine myself sitting here in the warmer months and drawing, bird watching, or even napping! I love color and texture and natural fragrances, and pretty soon I was inside a lovely little world of herbs and flowers!

I printed my photo onto a piece of acrylic art paper.

My Connecting Threads ‘junk’ mail had come this week, so I pulled it out and began looking through for colors, shapes, and patterns.

I started tearing and cutting tiny pieces

and randomly placing a few on the photo.

Gluing such teeny tiny scraps is a chore! I added some paint for detail – and of course our fat cat Chubbs had to be there! And then I saw a trellis – reminiscent of the one my son Gabe made for me many years ago – and I wanted that to be my entrance point.

Painted clay pottery adds a lovely artistic flair and can be arranged and rearranged. I imagined several sizes bursting with color and foliage. I envisioned the soil dotted with some ground cover of white allysum and lemon thyme, added some flowers – anemones would be nice – over by the propane tank to hide it a bit, and outlined and shaded here and there.

Lastly, I coated it with some diluted Aleene’s tacky glue and put it into a frame!

I can feel the warmth and smell the fragrances every time I walk by it; and now I REALLY can’t wait for spring!

Determined Kitty!

Do you own a determined kitty? A kitty who is lazy as can be UNTIL he has it in his head that he wants something? Haha! That's what this series is about!

Happy week to all you determined kitties out there!

Weekend Skirt Creations!

Some new creations from the weekend! I found this lime green dotted fabric while at my local thrift store on Saturday (which I love). It was a sundress of sorts - rather ugly, actually, with this yucky green lacy stuff all over. But the fabric itself was very cute. So I bought it ,and after washing it, cut it into a skirt. I added some ribbing I had on hand and then mixed some fabric paint Itogether - red, white, and blue - to make the kitties. I had just had a customer tell me the day before that she liked my cat themed clothing in Catcalls, but there were no plus sizes, so this is, hopefully, the beginning of more of those sizes. It was quite fun to make!

Not to leave my Dogbarks shop out of the fun, I pulled out the left over flannel you see here, and after looking it over, decided a skirt would be a cute creation for this remnant as well. So I did the same thing again, adding pockets and a waistband from a black t-shirt. It's very comfy!

Just click on the pictures to find more info on them.

So what did YOU create this past weekend?

Kitty Art for Sun-Loving Dreamy Cats

It was 80 degrees on Friday (4-20) ...so much like beach weather! The kitties were out having fun in the sun! Finding their favorite 'beam' and settling in for awhile is what makes life so pleasant....ahhh to be a cat....

dreaming about the day when you can float up into the trees and visit those feathered 'friends' and invite them  to share a meal.....oh what a delicacy!

Enjoy your weather while you have it, kitties - it's cold and getting ready to snow here!

Art work is available in my Catcalls shop. Click the pictures for more info.

Cool Jewels from a Fiery Red Headed Cat!

Happy Monday to all Kitty Lovers! Time for the weekly edition of Monday MEWsings! This week is being dedicated to our fearless kitty captain of the Cat Avis Unite Team, Miss MABJewelry! I mean - check out that hair! ANY cat mom whose kitty has THAT hair is fearless, don't you think?! She is  mom to the handsome Franklin (as seen in fiery photo) and the gorgeous Gus. You can see more of them both HERE. Thank you, Mabs, for keeping the CAU team so fun, friendly, and light-hearted! We all  love you!

"All of this started because I wanted to make myself a bracelet. Seriously. From that one single bracelet, an empire grew. Well, a teeny tiny, mini-empire. Unique. Quirky. Joyful. Rich. Those are my favorite jewelry adjectives.

The coolest thing about selling my creations is when a customer discovers their perfect piece of jewelry from the pieces I've made. The second coolest thing is knowing that there are people all over the US, and, since etsy, all over the world wearing something I made. In Sweden! In the U.K.! In Indiana!

The greatest thing about Etsy in particular is the community, both buyers and sellers, people from all over connecting with other people. I've gotten more help and support (and had more fun) here than I ever expected. And I have been so lucky to have such great buyers. I'm enjoying my experience here immensely."

Make sure to click on these photos to go to MABs shop where you find 276 original lovely pieces to choose from! And guess what?? Shipping is FREE to any where in the whole wide world! Now THAT is good MEWS!

Ink and Watercolor Cat and Dog Art

I'm getting ready to head back to Ohio after spending almost four glorious months in Montana. I'm having moments of breakdowns as I think about driving AWAY from the mountains, the blue skies, the dry air, the milder winters and heading into damp, cloudy, sunless, snow-filled Northeast Ohio. I will go hiking in the mountains one more time before I leave Friday. Hopefully I will be back next spring.
Since I don't want to add much bulk to my inventory that I must take back, I have been painting and drawing. These are all available in my shops and can be accessed by clicking on the art. They are all affordable, original works, not prints.

Newest shop! Illustrating all those verification words!

Well....I have done it again. Opened another shop on Etsy! I must be addicted. This is my fifth. But this one was just begging to be created! You know all those ridiculous verification words you must type in for many blogs? Paddlypat, dangu, tative, and my fave, ubolowle! So many funny words! My mind insists that they be defined each time I see them, and almost instantly something comes into focus of what this must mean. So I thought I would do everyone the favor of actually giving all these poor neglected words a place in life! The Verification Cat defines and illustrates these in ACEO form. Each one is colorful and original. TVC, as I call him, gives an accurate definition, illustrates it, then gives a sample sentence at the bottom. He would also love to have you pass along your own odd verification words so he can add to his collection. Here's a few samples of what you'll find at The Verification Cat shop on Etsy! Just click on any one of them to be taken to the listing in the shop. SO put on some UBOLOWLE, have a seat ( but not for too long, lest ABLUXES consume you!) and enjoy your visit!

Please feel free to leave your 'VERI' words for TVC in the comments or through the Etsy shop.

And you can follow @TheVeriCat on twitter!

My Handmade Pink & Green Cat Fabric

I have a number of leftover pillowcase liners from my 'stuffing' of  cats and dogs in my shops. I buy regular pillows and use the fill for all my pillow pals and plushies. So I have all these liners that I have kept for various things. The most recent ones I have collected are a 60% cotton/40% polyester medium weight fabric. Much heavier than the  muslin that normally encases the polyfil. So I made my own fabric print!

I used green fabric pastels for the circles, black ink for the cats, then I took a thread spool and added petals around each circle with pink paint.

Each cat is different! So now I am thinking...what will I make with this 24" x 18" fabric? I thought a pillow sham might be nice with a pink envelope back and ruffle. But I also have more pieces and thought perhaps a summer top would be cute, too. So, I am looking for suggestions!
What do you think?

Dog & Cat Pillow Covers with Personality!

I am really enjoying the pillow cover realm! A previous post showed my first cat pillow cover, "Phooey". I have since made three more. I am trying to capture the cat and dog response to their world on each cover. Below are my latest attempts at doing so. What do you think?
(Click on any picture to go directly to my catcalls or dogbarks shop)

This scared dog was from  friends, Sassysashadoxie and PaniEva - thank you!

I would love to hear of your cat and dog personalities that might be able to be transformed into a pillow cover!
