Cool Jewels from a Fiery Red Headed Cat!

Happy Monday to all Kitty Lovers! Time for the weekly edition of Monday MEWsings! This week is being dedicated to our fearless kitty captain of the Cat Avis Unite Team, Miss MABJewelry! I mean - check out that hair! ANY cat mom whose kitty has THAT hair is fearless, don't you think?! She is  mom to the handsome Franklin (as seen in fiery photo) and the gorgeous Gus. You can see more of them both HERE. Thank you, Mabs, for keeping the CAU team so fun, friendly, and light-hearted! We all  love you!

"All of this started because I wanted to make myself a bracelet. Seriously. From that one single bracelet, an empire grew. Well, a teeny tiny, mini-empire. Unique. Quirky. Joyful. Rich. Those are my favorite jewelry adjectives.

The coolest thing about selling my creations is when a customer discovers their perfect piece of jewelry from the pieces I've made. The second coolest thing is knowing that there are people all over the US, and, since etsy, all over the world wearing something I made. In Sweden! In the U.K.! In Indiana!

The greatest thing about Etsy in particular is the community, both buyers and sellers, people from all over connecting with other people. I've gotten more help and support (and had more fun) here than I ever expected. And I have been so lucky to have such great buyers. I'm enjoying my experience here immensely."

Make sure to click on these photos to go to MABs shop where you find 276 original lovely pieces to choose from! And guess what?? Shipping is FREE to any where in the whole wide world! Now THAT is good MEWS!

New Felt Dog and Cat Friends

I have been busy creating some felties and thought I would share them! It started with a request from Nicole at Brizel4TheAnimals. She makes gorgeous silk art tapestry boxes and the third photo in each has a prop of some kind. She asked if I could make a little dog and cat face to use with her photos. After some thought, I came up with these two, Elmira and Eddie:

I was happy with the way they turned out so decided to add some felt supplies to my shops.

My friend Diana thought they were brooches, since I had mentioned I was going to make some of those. So as soon as my brooch pins arrived, I sewed two of them onto the backs for her.

While I waited for the pins to come, I made a couple of necklaces using black ribbon.

And then I went on to make three more dog brooches which I gave names to.

I had read a wonderful story by an  Etsy for Animals teammate about her greyhound fosters, which you will find HERE. That became my inspiration for the greyhound who I named Kenny, after Jane's foster dog.

Kenny

So THAT is what I have up to this week! I also made a few skirts for my shop, The Cat Rack
What did you accomplish? Please share!

If you are interested in any of these felties, just click on the picture. I hope to expand my offerings to include other dog breeds.

It's Furbaby Friday!

Have you ever seen a Keeshond? If you're like me, you have, but had no idea what breed they were! Theresa, from Faerymoongoddess on Etsy, has a very sweet 'tail' to tell about her furbabies Willow and Neo!

Theresa will receive 50 FREE TWEETS next week for being my guest!

I absolutely adore Keeshonds! If I could, I'd have a house full of them (although I'd need to take up stock in the vacuum cleaner industry). What type of breed is a Keeshond (properly pronounced "kayz-hond" )? This link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeshond will tell you all the specifics. Although the Keeshond is growing in popularity in the United States, I still field many questions about my doggies. They are truly like no other. Essentially, they are energetic, cuddly, loving unbridled bundles of energy. I often say they are like eternal two-year-olds!

Their most striking feature is their spectacled-eyes (kind of like a raccoon). I first met a Keeshond when my husband and I were helping friends move about 10 years ago. Like many people, I was unfamiliar with the breed and I asked a ton of questions. I think I pretty much forgot about moving and played with the dog most of the day! When the time came for us to get a dog, I immediately thought "Keeshond!" We decided to go with a local independent breeder. I met the parents-to-be and was sent photos of the litter once they arrived - including a photo of the adorable little furbaby who was to soon come home to us. And then the ball dropped. We were told by this breeder that we'd have to sign a paper agreeing to be "co-owner" of the pup - as the breeder intended to put the pup on the dog show circuit. I was crushed - we were never told this information. We just wanted a special pup to call our very own. We wanted a pup to love and to play with - and not have to care if he or she got messy now and then. I wanted to raise my pup myself - not as a trophy - but as a well-loved member of our family. Needless to say, we had to tell the breeder "thanks, but no thanks."

After a lot of tears, my hubby suggested we try a pet store that we were told had open pens for the pups to socialize and play in. I guess it was fate - because when we arrived, we were told that two Keeshonds would be arriving within the next two days. I couldn't believe our luck! We gave our phone number and anxiously awaited the call. And this was how we got our little Willow.

Believe - Original Mixed Media Faerie Art on Wood Plaque

Willow is now 9 years old, and I love calling her my princess. She's kind of ornery, which is a bit unusual for the breed, but it appears that Willow prefers to be a one-dog kind of person (mainly for her mommy). She's also highly intelligent! She learned so quickly - picking up sit, stay, "side," and "cookie" almost immediately. I remember how tiny she was when we first got her. She literally fit in the palm of my hand. As I mentioned, Willow has her quirks, but she is very loyal and protective. She also does the cutest things. Every night, when it’s time to go to bed, Willow needs to find "the" perfect toy to take with her. She'll scurry to her toy box and select just the right one. Sometimes, it's inappropriate (like a hard white beef bone that will often fall off the bed and land on the floor with a big thud). She also instinctively knows when it's time for mommy to head to bed. When I get up from the couch late in the evening, she knows it’s time for her bedtime treasure hunt! Willow also causes quite a commotion when either mommy or daddy comes home. She'll be waiting by the door, wiggling her curled up tail, and holding an "offering" (most likely a stuffed toy) in her mouth!

Adorable Little Gold Running Fox Earrings - OOAK

We went directly to our local open-pen pet store to find our baby boy, Neo. And he is the light of my life! Neo, short for Neopolitan, LOVES life and everything and everyone in it. He is the happiest dog I have ever known. He's 4 years old, but he thinks and acts like a little pup. He always makes me laugh when he sleeps with his back legs splayed out behind him. It's funny - when Neo was just a pup, he was SO serious. But once he learned to smile, he did it constantly.

Neo is most definitely a cuddle monkey. While Willow is more independent, Neo likes nothing more than to curl up next to you and lick, lick, lick. Yes, our little guy has a thing for licking. He also joins Willow in the bed time fun every evening. Whereas Willow jumps to the middle of the bed, my little boy warms up my spot, and then moves to the top of my pillow where he stays for most of the night. Each morning when I wake up, I get sloppy wet kisses all over my face. Neo loves his sister and likes to lick the insides of her ear, which she seems to enjoy.

Neo also LOVES to eat. He will literally gulp down his food in less than a minute, while his older sister is still demurely munching on her meal. He never tries to eat her food, which is amazing in itself! Neo is quite the little begger - he likes to get right on in there and practically put his snout on the plate. Willow will just sit quietly by your feet as you eat - hoping that something will magically drop from your plate. Both of them LOVE snacking on almonds, cheese, carrots and especially tomatoes!

I love my sweet furbabies so very much. I can't even imagine life without them. I love that they keep me company all day long while I work and create. Although they are the same breed, they have two entirely distinct personalities - but that just makes them all the more special to me. Thanks for allowing me to introduce Willow and Neo to all of you.

IT'S FURBABY FRIDAY!
Say hello to Coco, Gabby, and Jacque-our first bird feature!
Their mom, Trish, owner of http://JewelsbyTrish.etsy.com , will receive
100 FREE TWEETS since she was my 100th follower!

Jacque is a 6 month old Conure

Jacque, our green cheeked Conure, has only been with us a few weeks. It took A LOT of talking and discussing with the hubby!! He only had memories of our last messy parakeet. Everyday, I would tell him a fun tidbit about this breed of bird. They are relatively quiet birds, not messy, they can be potty trained, taught to talk somewhat, and LOVE attention!! A week later, my poor, sweet husband finally gave in and actually came to the store to help me bring him home. He even surprised me by pulling items off the shelf that Jacque "needed." Too funny!!

What do you think of your new home, Jacque?

You ever heard of ‘birds of paradise’? I think this is the place they must be talking about! This place rocks! I have two furry friends. At night we have this little thing going. Coco or Gabby will make a whining sound and I copy them. It only takes a short time, but our little conversation is all about getting me out of that cage for a bit! When I’m out, if I fluff up my feathers real nice and bend my head a tad, I get awesome head and neck scratches...ahhhh! What a life! I even get my favorite treat...millet! Yummy! At first I tried to get them to share their human food with me, but they’re pretty protective of it, so I just go into my own cage and eat my treats while they eat theirs.

My mom makes things...shiny things. I love to watch her. I’d like to give it a try sometime. Maybe I could make some cool decorations for my cage! There’s so many things to see and do here...I just LOVE my new home!

Gabby, a 5 year old Border Collie mix

This is Gabby! She is a Border Collie mix. We got her in February of 2005 while I was pregnant with my 2nd child. Our purebred American Eskimo that was the love of our lives, had passed away a few years earlier. We grieved and said we could never replace her so...NO MORE DOGS!! Nevertheless, our family began yearning for another dog a few years later, especially our 8 year old daughter. So one day, while I was big and pregnant, I saw an ad in the paper that LaPaw, a local pet rescue organization, would be hosting an adoption day at our old vet's office. We headed over, warning our daughter that we would NOT be getting a dog unless they had a terrier, which would be the least irritating for my allergies. Of course, there were no terriers. But Naomi spotted little Gabby, and it was love at first sight. She held and walked her for 30 minutes. But, alas, she had already been promised to another-even though that was weeks ago and they never came to get her. After the director saw how much Naomi loved this puppy, she agreed that Gabby could be ours IF we took her home that day. Now remember I am pregnant! Sooo, I went to the car, had a good cry, came back out and said YES!

Gabby has been a fabulous dog!! She has grown into a long legged, smarty pants, is extremely intelligent, and we love her dearly!!!

Coco is a 2 1/2 year old Shih Tzu and Something mix!

My neighbor’s dog had puppies in the fall of 2007. The mother is a purebred Shih Tzu, but the daddy, wellll, not so sure! My neighbor had to go away for the weekend and left ME in charge of the mom and all her pups! So several times a day, we walked across the street and tended the little family. And of course, one pup stood out from the rest and I fell in love! That first day, I kept my mouth shut, knowing the moment I mentioned my love to my daughter that the begging would begin! On the second day, I could no longer stand it. I mentioned how sweet and adorable Coco was and my daughter looked up at me with those big, beautiful eyes of hers and said, "She is my favorite too!!" Thus the begging began!! This time it was my dear husband that needed major convincing. (Naomi was 10 that year and Benjamin was 2.) We ALL worked on my husband for a week! Even the 2 year old was in on it!!

One day my neighbor called. She was fed up and going crazy with all the pups! She said she had them in the backyard and was so tired, she didn't care if a big hawk came down and scooped the puppies up for supper!!! Ahhhh!! I told my husband that was it, done, over…. we were getting a 2nd dog and NOW! He laughed and said, "Go get her!" So we acquired Coco, named after Coco Chanel, in October of 2007.

She is not as smart as Gabby, but she has a sweet and playful spirit!! If you want to wrestle, she's your girl. But be careful because she is ruthless!!

Coco and Gabby, all grown up, living happily in a loving home!
